About the City
Madrid will host AECD 2027, welcoming participants to one of Europe’s most vibrant capitals. Home to over 3.5 million residents within the city and more than 6 million in the metropolitan area, Madrid stands as the largest city in Spain and the third largest in the European Union. Known for its rich history, world-class art, lively public spaces, and ambitious urban transformation projects, Madrid offers an inspiring setting for dialogue on the future of Arab and European cities.
Urban Transformation in Madrid
Madrid has undergone, and continues to pursue, major urban transformation projects that closely reflect the themes at the heart of AECD 2027, including sustainable mobility, high-quality public spaces, environmental improvement, urban regeneration and the management of metropolitan growth.
Key Projects Includes:
Madrid Río – a major urban regeneration project that transformed areas around the Manzanares River into public parks, pedestrian spaces, cycling routes, cultural areas, and recreational facilities. 🔗
Madrid Nuevo Norte – one of Europe’s major urban development projects, planned as a new mixed-use district integrating housing, business, public space, transport connectivity, and sustainability principles. 🔗
Gran Vía and central-area improvements – public-realm upgrades and mobility changes that have strengthened Madrid’s historic center as a pedestrian-friendly and culturally active urban corridor. 🔗
Landscape of Light: Paseo del Prado and El Retiro Park – a historic urban landscape connecting culture, heritage, science, green space, and civic identity, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. 🔗
